The cold weather heating season is just about upon us. Many people do not know of the increase in home heating oil that has occurred in the last couple months. Currently in Ely, the cost for 100 to 200 gallons of heating oil is $5.87 per gallon. If you burn 1,000 gallons a year that is $5,870. People, your old relatives on fixed incomes do not have that kind of cash lying around.
You need to have conversations with your elderly relatives to find out what their situation is and think about how you are going to assist them. Do it now.
For the elderly that do not have any relatives in town I suggest you contact St. Louis County to find out if you can receive some assistance with the home heating oil. In St. Louis County, you can contact the Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency in Virginia, the phone number is 218-735-6839, email is EAP.DOCUMENT@AEOA.ORG. This year’s program start date is Oct. 1. Ask them who is the administrator in Lake County. Get in line now, as there are sure to be a lot of people applying.
