I have attached three essays below all written by the same author, John Pavlovitz. He is a deeply ethical man who imagines a different reality than the one we experience today. I first read these articles over the last few weeks/ months and revisited them on a long flight home yesterday. They stuck in my brain.
Each article reflects in its own way, on the breakdown of the values that hold a society together— virtues like kindness, a focus on the common good, compassion, decency, and the courage to stand up and do what’s right. This social erosion did not happen overnight and reversing it won’t happen quickly either.
Yet, in Minnesota and in NYC, I am fortunate to see these civic qualities on full display almost daily. I see folks helping strangers, acting with generosity, and choosing empathy over indifference. Some days I am bursting with hope.
We care deeply about Ely and the larger world around us. We care about future generations and the kind of world they will inherit from us.
How do we make sure we leave them a social order that chooses kindness over cruelty and bravery over silence? I know it starts with us— but I don’t have the answers. Maybe you do. It’s a worthy topic to contemplate.
