Goal scoring cools off after four-goal opener

SILVER BAY — The Timberwolves dropped to 1-1 on the young season here on Tuesday as they fell to the Storm in a 1-0 shutout. Freshman goalie Henry Fetterer was nearly perfect throughout, turning aside 22 of the Storm’s 23 shots on goal. But North Shore goalie Dax Krech did him one better, stopping all 29 of Ely’s shots on goal.
North Shore’s Nox Peterson scored the game’s only point, with an unassisted strike at the 11:40 mark of the second period. While the Wolves had their chances, they never made it past the pipes.
Penalties made little difference in the contest as the Storm’s lone goal came at even strength. Ely junior Evan Leeson spent the most time in the box, including a five-minute major for checking from behind and a ten-minute misconduct charge from the same incident.

Ely 4, Moose Lake Area 3
Playing at home last Saturday, the Wolves took advantage of power plays to notch a 4-3 win on home ice in their Nov. 29 season opener against Moose Lake Area.
Leeson used that advantage to put the Wolves on the board at the 7:50 mark of the first period, with an assist from fellow junior Owen Marolt. Senior Rhett Johnson put Ely up 2-0 just a minute and a half into the second period on an even strength goal with assists from Marolt and senior Hunter Halbakken.
Three minutes later, sophomore Cooper Mayranen put Ely up 3-0 on the Wolves’ second power play goal of the night, with Leeson notching the assist.
The Rebels finally got on the board a minute later, and they went on to add a second goal at the 14:36 mark of the period. The Rebels knotted the match at three late in the third period, but Johnson, with assists from Marolt and junior Stig Majerus, broke the tie at the 16:48 mark to send the Wolves to the lockers with the win.
The Wolves outshot the Rebels 35-23. Ely’s senior goalie Lewis Powell blocked 20 shots for an .870 save percentage.
The Rebels hurt their cause with nine penalties on the night, including a five-minute fighting penalty along with a ten-minute ejection penalty.
That kept the Wolves on the advantage for nearly half the game. The Wolves cooled their heels in the box five times, for a total of ten minutes.
Jayden Zemke was the only repeat offender, on a tripping and a high-sticking charge, both in the first period.
The Wolves are set to host Bagley/Fosston on Friday night, with a 6 p.m. start. They’ll host the Broncos next Tuesday, with another 6 p.m. start.
