ELY — Junior Ruby Lowe shot the lights out of the Memorial High gym last Thursday, scorching the net with three-balls and scoring 29 points to lead the Wolves to their first victory of the season, a 75-58 trouncing of International Falls.
Lowe was on fire from the outset, draining a pair of treys, one near the top of the key and the other from the left corner to stake Ely to a 6-0 lead. Zoe Mackenzie dropped in a baseline jumper before the Broncos finally got on the scoreboard, but the visitors would be playing catchup all night long.
The Wolves played an up-tempo pace, sweeping the defensive boards and pushing the ball up court. A lively passing game on the offensive side effectively moved the ball around to find the open shooters, and Lowe was one of the beneficiaries, knocking down a blistering total of nine trifectas while shooting 53 percent from the field.
But Lowe didn’t have to carry the load alone, as the Wolves had three other players scoring in double figures. Mackenzie did her damage both inside and outside of the arc, dropping in two treys, three deuces and a pair of charities for 14 points. Amelia Penke scored 11, and Lillie O’Neill was right on her heels with 10. Penke led the team in rebounds with 11, followed by O’Neill with seven. Lydia Shultz led the team in assists and steals with eight and four, respectively.
Chisholm
The Wolves had a much longer than usual road trip on Saturday when they traveled to the Twin Cities to take on Chisholm in an afternoon game at the Target Center. The 4-0 Bluestreaks came into the game scoring an average of 78 points per game, and they put another notch in their belt with a 61-42 win over the Wolves. Ely scored just 12 points inside the arc as the Bluestreaks continued their season-long defensive dominance by forcing 29 turnovers.
Seven Wolves scored, but only one, Shultz, scored in double figures with 15.
A scheduled road trip to Silver Bay on Tuesday was postponed due to inclement weather.
Looking ahead, the Wolves will head into the holiday break with a Dec. 18 tilt at North Woods.
