REGIONAL — Ely found the cross country circuit at the White Oak Antique Tractor Club in Deer River to be the fast track to success on Tuesday, as the Wolves ran away with first place in the five-team Deer River Invitational meet.
Eight of the first 12 runners across the line in the boys race wore Wolves red as Ely thoroughly dominated the 44-runner competition. Wyatt Devine led the way in second place with a time of 17:35.1. Otto Devine took fourth with a time of 18:26.6, and Brooks Brenny placed fifth with a time of 18:51.1.
Other Wolves in the Top 12 and their times included Mason Kurnava, seventh, 19:16.1; Blake Houde, eighth, 19:24.7; Drew Johnson, ninth, 19:35.9; Aksel Skustad, 11th, 19:48.3; and Grant Chittum, 12th, 19:48.3.
Ely’s team score of 26 was far ahead of runner-up McGregor with 53 points. International Falls, Pine River-Backus, and Chisholm were the other schools participating.
Girls
Molly Brophy paced the Wolves to victory in the girls division with a time of 20:47.9 and a second-place finish, while Mattie Lindsay nailed down third place with a time of 21:27.4. Katy Brophy circuited the 5K course in 22:15.3, good enough for seventh, and Isabella Macho clocked a time of 22:57.9 to finish tenth in the 39-runner field.
Ely’s tally of 35 points easily eclipsed second-place International Falls with 58.
The Wolves now set their sights on defending the home turf of Ely Golf Club for next Tuesday’s Ely Invitational meet.
