HIBBING — The Ely Timberwolves girls turned in one of their strongest performances of the season on Saturday, piling up points across the track and in the field to finish fourth at the 70th annual Doc Savage Invitational.
Ely’s 87.5 points trailed only Class AA powers Hibbing, Rock Ridge, and Hermantown, with the Wolves finishing ahead of several larger programs in the nine-team field.
Sophomore Violet Udovich led the way with a dominant all-around effort, winning three events and adding a runner-up finish. Udovich took first in the 100 meters in 12.53 seconds and the 400 meters in 57.47, and cleared 5’3” to win the high jump. She also placed second in the triple jump at 34’2”.
Ely added key points in the hurdles and distance relays, with Mattie Lindsay finishing third in the 300-meter hurdles in 53.46 and running a leg on the Wolves’ second-place 4x800 relay team. Lindsay teamed with Addison Kannas, Katy Brophy, and Elsa Ellerbroek to post a time of 11:01.61.
In the field events, Kylie Mosher delivered a strong day with a third-place finish in the discus at 85’6”.
The Ely boys finished sixth overall in the ten-team event, with their strongest performances coming in the distance events.
The Wolves placed third in the 4x800 relay, where Oliver Hohenstein, Blake Houde, Grady Anderson, and Wyatt Devine combined for a time of 8:58.30.
Individually, Ely runners showed well against a larger-school field. Devine took fourth in the 800 meters in 2:11.06, while Oren Solum finished fourth in the 1600 meters in 5:09.48, and Anderson followed in fifth at 5:11.64. Houde added a fourth-place finish in the 3200 meters in 10:54.38.
A meet scheduled for Tuesday at Mesabi East was canceled due to cold weather.
