The war between Russia and Ukraine has been in existence for four years. Trump claimed that he could broker a cease fire within a day. According to the New York Times, “Putin has invested hours flattering Trump and dangling the prospect of U.S.-Russia deals in an apparent attempt to stop the President from siding with Zelensky.” It should be remembered that Ukraine has large deposits of rare and valuable minerals.
Zelensky has been seeking to acquire from the U.S. long-range Tomahawk missiles that can strike deep within Russia. Trump vacillated, then after talking to Putin, decided not to provide the missiles to Zelensky.
Nevertheless, the Ukrainians have been very successful in manufacturing a variety of types of drones, some that can operate over 1,900 miles into Russian territory. They can fly low, just above treetops, and can avoid Russian radar. Some are made of plywood, which radar can’t detect.
Ukraine has had excellent intelligence in choosing Russian targets. The drones have inflicted significant damage on oil refineries, depots, maritime ports, military storage sites, airfields, railroad structures, and troop movements. It has attacked energy sites at least 58 times. Nearly 40% of the country’s refining capacity remains shut down.
Oil refining operations are critical for Russia because it is a major source of income. It also supplies fuel for supporting the war tanks, vehicles and supplying food, and ammunition to their troops. Repairing refineries can take months, even years to restore production.
Unfortunately, Russia has targeted Ukraine civilian population and infrastructure in retribution and is responsible for invading Ukraine.
