ELY — The Ely Timberwolves needed just one inning to take control on Monday, erupting for 10 runs in the third on their way to a 12-0 shutout win over Mesabi East.
The Wolves broke things open with a mix of timely hitting and help from the Giants’ defense. Two Mesabi East errors set the stage, and Ely capitalized with six hits in the inning to turn a tight game into a rout.
Tyde Brecke led the offensive surge with three hits and two runs batted in as part of Ely’s 11-hit attack. Stig Majerus added two hits and drove in two runs, while Drew Johnson delivered a two-RBI single and scored twice.
On the mound, Hunter Halbakken was in control from the start. The Ely right-hander allowed just one hit over four innings while striking out six to earn the win.
Jack Davies closed things out with a scoreless fifth inning as the Wolves improved to 5-3 on the season.
Huck Peterson accounted for Mesabi East’s only hit with a single in the first inning, while Langston Mathson took the loss for the Giants.
