ORR — A familiar North Country tradition will look a little different this year as the Orr Center takes the lead in organizing the community’s annual July 3rd Fun Day.
Events will take place throughout the day on Friday, July 3, with many activities centered at the Orr Center, the former Orr School building.
The day begins with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Orr Fire Department from 7-10 a.m. at the Orr Community Center (former Orr Legion building). Craft vendors will also be open from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. at the community center.
The annual 5K walk-run, sponsored by Virgie Hegg Hospice, begins with registration from 8-8:45 a.m. at the tennis courts, followed by the race at 9 a.m.
Activities at the Orr Center begin at 9 a.m. and include the thrift store, mercantile, artisan vendors, face painting, pony rides, food trucks, and a large garage sale in the main gym. Barrel rides are scheduled from 10-11:30 a.m., while musician Uncle Eric will perform from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
A parade is always one of the highlights of the July 3 celebration, and this year there will be two opportunities to take part.
The main community parade will line up at 11:30 a.m. at the tennis courts and step off at noon. The route will circle the Orr Center campus and conclude on the south side of the building.
A second kiddie parade will take place immediately following the main parade. Young participants are encouraged to decorate bicycles, scooters, wagons, costumes, or other creative entries. The parade will assemble near Lumber Orr Hardware and follow the traditional route past the Orr Community Center.
Afternoon activities include an Orr High School alumni open house at Orr Center and Catholic church bingo at the Orr Community Center, both from 2-4 p.m., followed by the annual duck races at the Dam Supper Club at 3 p.m. Registration begins at 2:45 p.m.
The popular bean bag tournament returns to the Orr Muni, with registration at 3:30 p.m. and competition beginning at 4 p.m.
The celebration concludes with a street dance featuring Cowboy Angel Blue at 7 p.m. at the Orr Muni and fireworks over Orr Bay at dusk, sponsored by the Orr Pelican Lake Resort Association.
Organizers encourage residents and visitors alike to spend the day in Orr and take part in the community celebration.
