BABBITT — The Northeast Range/Ely girls swim team wrapped up their regular season at home on Oct. 21 with a nail-biter against Stella Maris, coming up just short in a 47-46 loss.
Despite the narrow defeat, the Nighthawks put together a strong day in the pool, racking up multiple first-place finishes. Via DeBeltz led the way with wins in both the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, clocking times of 2:17.28 and 6:18.24. Tuuli Koivisto added a victory in the 200 individual medley at 2:43.59, and teamed up with DeBeltz, Ivy Ohlhauser, and Lucy Luthens to take first in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:27.05. The Nighthawks’ top 200 freestyle relay squad of Jorden Borchert, Lindsay Israel, Evelyn Moran, and Luthens also claimed gold with a time of 1:59.12.
Koivisto rounded out the night’s wins with a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke, coming in at 1:15.16.
The one-point loss underscored how far the young Nighthawks have come over the course of the season. They’ll carry that momentum into the upcoming Section 7A meet, where both individual and relay performances could make a strong showing against some of the region’s toughest competition.
