COLERAINE — The Raiders dominated the Timberwolves here on Tuesday, as they sent Ely home nursing a 5-0 shellacking.
The Raiders controlled the puck throughout the game, limiting the Wolves to just 16 shots on goal. Meanwhile, the Raiders peppered Ely goalie Henry Fetterer with 50 shots in the contest. Greenway went up 2-0 in the first period, scoring their second of the frame while short-handed.
They added two more in the second period, both on power plays. Ely’s Jayden Zemke was in the box for both goals, sitting out on minors for tripping and cross-checking. The Raiders added one more in the third period to complete the game’s scoring. The loss dropped Ely’s record to 6-11.
Ely had better luck on Saturday in Spooner, Wis., where they manhandled the Rails 8-1. The Wolves exploded out of the box, lighting the lamp three times within the first eight minutes. Evan Leeson, Hunter Halbakken, and Sean Merriman each notched goals in the opening minutes. Halbakken notched his second goal of the period in the final minute and a half and Owen Marolt added Ely’s fifth of the frame at the 14:09 mark. It all left the Wolves up 5-1 after the early frenzy.
Rhett Johnson scored the only goal of the second period just 54 seconds in, while Ely was playing short-handed, the first of two short-handed goals on the day for the Wolves. Evan Leeson added another goal in the first minute of the third period on a power play. Cooper Mayranen added the final goal at the 7:44 mark.
The game was filled with penalties as the Wolves were tagged ten times, all minors. Spooner took the hit six times, including a rash of four straight penalties within the first six minutes of the third period. The Wolves outshot the Rails 42-32.
Ely is set to host Moose Lake Area on Friday, with a 6 p.m. start. They host WSFLG on Saturday and will try to fend off Greenway in Ely on Monday as the regular season heads into the final stretch.
