Ely girls nab third at Crosby-Ironton track meet

CROSBY- The Ely girls track and field team opened the season with a strong showing Friday, finishing third at the Crosby-Ironton Anniversary Invitational, while the Timberwolves boys placed eighth.
Ely racked up 110 points on the girls side, trailing only Rock Ridge and host Crosby-Ironton in a meet that required a three-hour road trip to open the season.
Leading the way was Violet Udovich, who picked up right where she left off after last year’s stellar season, sweeping the sprint events. Udovich won the 100 meters in 12.41 seconds, the 200 in 25.59, and the 400 in 58.35.
Ely also got a runner-up finish from Mattie Lindsay in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking a 53.61, and another second-place effort from Annika Eastham in the 100-meter hurdles at 18.74.
The Timberwolves’ 4x800 relay team of Lindsay, Elsa Ellerbroek, Katy Brophy, and Isabella Macho added a second-place finish in 11:01.16.
In the field events, Kaylin Visser delivered a first-place throw in the discus at 109 feet, 8 inches, while Addison Forsman placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 29-5.
Ely also picked up a third-place finish in the 4x100 relay, with Lillie O’Neill, Chantel Ridings, Sydney Cooley, and Lizzy Merriman finishing in 1:02.86.
On the boys side, Toivo Forsman led Ely with a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles in 20.36.
The Timberwolves also got a third-place finish from the 4x800 relay team of Wyatt Devine, Oliver Hohenstein, Brooks Brenny, and Blake Houde, which ran a 9:05.17.
Ely finished with 40 points in the boys standings.
