The whistleblower should be praised for investigating and reporting the cruel treatment these animals have endured. It's the sheriff's deputy that should be investigated for letting this situation continue. He saw the dead horse, so it should have been reported immediately! Seems to me Litman is covering for the deputy.

All I can say is, HOW can anyone let your animals suffer like this. And then just leave the animals lay where they fall dead! NO attempt at all to clean up any of the animals?? I do not understand! Not only that, trying to pass in off on the person who buys the land?? And yet she gets a second chance to care for these animals?? What about those animals that died, do they get a second chance??

Normally I would not go through registering to comment on any site but this horrible discovery requires me to. As an animal lover, this is so very wrong in so many ways. This person needs to be arrested and charged with severe and numerous animal cruelty charges. The police department that did not do the job their badges require them to do should also be under investigation and put on unpaid leave until the investigation is complete...at which time some of the officers involved should have badges removed. There is no excuse for this time of neglect and torture- which is what this case amounts to. These animals were tortured. When I think of the mama horse trying to deliver her foal and birthing it in the door way to leave it lay and die it makes me physically ill. When I think of the dog standing in its own feces without food or water, it makes me angry enough to want to hurt the person who did this. I dont care what her story is. I dont care what her excuses are. It is a good thing I live far far away. A very good thing. Perhaps she needs to beleft to live in her feces in a small cage without food and water...but oh, thats right, we are a country that supposedly respects life. Right.

Oh and one more thing...this will get national attention eventually so all involved will be exposed and the one who "blew the whistle" will be exonerated.

We had a thread about this on facebook, and there is a person there that is actually trying to defend the owner of these poor animals. She claims there is no neglect and something else that she refuses to say had some part in this.I don't know what she supposedly know's,but good luck trying to get it out of her.

I was the one that initially contacted lisa about the animals....I would do it again in a second the only regret that i have is that i hear in january that it was going on...i have been treatened by bergs boyfiend and told that i was gonna pay.....these animals suffered and they slept like babys every night know that they were starving...it is a crime against humanity and they should be charged accordinly including the boyfriend that berg was living with while those animals were starving he was very aware of the situation..and just as guilty...they still think they did nothing wrong and are more concerned with threatening those that they believed turned them in...sick...

The owner has no right to ever own animals again, that is like returning children to a molester!. I know Lisa and she is heartbroken. There is a long thread of responsibility for this disgusting, cruel CRIME. Why didn't everyone that knew the owner who must have been distressed and unable to take care of these animals DO SOMETHING? From the guy who never got paid for hay, to the sheriff (who should be fired) to the people that witnessed the dead animals (aka as pets!!!). The unhumane society has no business allowing this family to keep the animals. Mares need someone around when they give birth in the WINTER! The fact that the irresponsible, cruel owner is considering trespassing charges shows how ludicrous the system is. Remove the animals, all of them immediately please!! The owners are obviously unable to care for them. A quick shot in the head would have been better than the suffering these animals endured.

I am requesting that the Timberjay reduce the size of the dead horse's photo. It is inflammatory and sad. I spent weeks trying to find someone to put my blind horse out of his misery. He was 14 years old, blind and afraid. I phoned dozens of people trying to find a humane way to end his misery. I was rescued, finally by a vet from Ely. My horse's life wasn't wasted. He was mercifully shot in the head and recycled as sled-dog food. He is now running forever and didn't suffer for a moment. Animal lovers do not need to see huge blow ups of a dead animal that obviously suffered before it mercifully died.

All of God's creatures are precious in His eyes. To do something this cruel to innocent animals is an outrage and there is no excuse.

First and this is important. If you cant take care of your animals FIND SOMEONE WHO CAN. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Second, yes, the slaughter houses have closed, but you can put an ad in the paper saying FREE HORSE cant you?? and the MN hooved animal rescue will help owners that can no longer care for their animals. there are many people who WOULD HAVE HELPED if we would have known this was happening. Third- someone should have brought these animals food and water. they didnt need to die, they didnt have to suffer. I would have done it if only i had known about it. is it really that hard to bring them a hay bale and haul some water? really? come on ppl. the owner obviously wouldnt have brought them to a slaughter house if she wouldnt even have brought them hay.

And last but certainly not least. Bring the girls who tried to help up on trespassing charges?? Those sheriffs should lose their badges. NOW. AND TAKE AWAY THEIR FOOD AND WATER. I would like to see them go without food and water for ONE DAY. This could have been prevented.

This needs to stop. Authorities DO YOUR F------ JOBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THIS WORLD THAT PEOPLE CAN TURN BLIND EYES TO THIS, THAT IT TAKES A COMMITTEE TO DECIDE WHETHER TO REMOVE THE LIVE ANIMALS, THAT SOMEONE CAN SUE FOR TREASPASSING ON THEIR PROPERTY WHEN INNOCENT LIVES ARE LEFT TO DIE???????? If these animals were children, no one would think twice before so called trespassing, and their wouldn't be a committee organized to talk about whether or not to remove the children!!!!!!!!! AND if these were children, the *owners* would be in prison as we write, not waiting for trial, no waiting while authorities decide "if" a crime has been committed!!!!!!!!!! COME ON PEOPLE, WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I read this story and I am sickened by it and the lack of concern from the sheriff's department!!

I certainly hope that at this time SOMEBODY has removed and is caring for the remaining animals,, WOW!! I cant imagine what could be wrong with the owner and her friends,,retardation or something,,,why would anyone defend her?? I bet she never misses a meal! This whole thing is strange ,,it seemed like nobody wanted to do anything except the two woman that blew the whistle ,,, It sure makes a person wonder about the deputy,,,he dosent deserve to be in " LAW ENFORCEMENT" !

I sure hope that justice will be served,,, and not just a slap on the wrist! Instead a slap to her face!!

I cannot help but wonder why any one near to this person (Berg) would not be honest with her and tell her she is wrong on so many levels, or is it that they see nothing wrong with what she was doing? Now she is crying "there is a situation" Well if that situation is that your "ex has been poisoning" these animals why would you be angry that the sheriffs were contacted? That would be my first response to some one "poisoning" my animals. I would first and foremost contact the sheriffs. If I was doing nothing wrong why would I be so angry that the sheriffs were there, again,? So i have to ask my self...."What kind of psychosis does this woman have?"

Next on my list is this needs to be seen as a learning opp for our sheriffs department, Apparently they need training in this area. We also need to educate people on what animal neglect is.

Sunday, March 27, 2011 | Report this

ok yes i will defend the people that had dead horses for many reasons. first of all how does any of you people know they didn't contact the sheriffs department about their livestock dropping dead in the winter. second have you ever tried to dig a hole in northern mn in the winter when the groung is frozen solid its almost impossibly. also its kinda strange that one of the people involved owns a kennel and her name on the front page would benefit her bussiness. and when has any of you ever helped another human being through a tough time instead of picking them apart like a bunch of ravens on a carcasse. and finally dont you think that this is a slap in the face for people that probably cared about these animals and couldnt move through the greiving process because they could bury them because of winter. and yes the tresspasser should be charged because if you lived in town and got caught snooping around someones yard you would be arrested. also remember that if humans werent on this earth nature would carry on, does someone bury all the dead deer in the forest. no the dont because nature takes care of it.

Sunday, March 27, 2011 | Report this

and yet another thing is why did this go to the paper, these people decided to violate someone civil rights and had them tried and judged not by the law but the community in which they live that is so wrong. and if you were getting poisined would you wanna eat. and have you seen some of the farms in that area one in particular comes to mind its sits ight off a main highway outside of tower and its barn is no more than i run down building with sheet metal propped up on the sides. and cant raw sheet metal hurt their animals. and yet why are they not getting investigated. and yet another interesting thing through doing some research some of these people have been involved in numerous rescue cases involving horses and gee i wonder who got the horses after the rescue. and yes i beleive in the first amendment but that doesnt give anyone the right to smear peoples name and ruin their lives. and yes karma is a bad thing and so i hubris so i hope the people out there trying to make a name for themselves though other peoples misery get what they deserve.

The cruelty of this situation sickens me. I am the prior owner of 32 horses, 100+ cattle, 150+ sheep and 7 dogs. It is more humane to euthenize animals yourself or with a vets' help then let them suffer days & months like this. Lisa & Tawni are to be commended ~ not brought up on trespassing charges. (Were there "NO TRESPASSING" SIGNS posted?) doubt it. But that issue is beside the point of this article. Neighbors, citizens, dept of public safety, where are you and why don't you "care" and "take action" when you see a "wrong"? It takes the whole community to stop these types of things and be persistent and even proactive. GET INVOLVED in your community ~ YOU can make it a better place to live. Public Safety officials it is your job ~ do it, that's what we pay you to do. I am a tax payer in St. Louis Cty ~ and I want better service and answers from our public officials not excuses !!

derrangeddruid ~ you are a derranged druid !!! Your reasons don't hold water with this excessivn neglect (dead & dieing). And I highly doubt Lisa had ulterior motives here with investigating and reporting. Newspapers report the NEWS. Good citizens HELP others in need all the time (especially when those in need don't expect it). Doubt there were any NO TRESPASSING signs posted on this property. I am not the only person who thinks You are WRONG.

What I would like to say is I am sorry to the person who had their own animal disposed of by the vet from Ely. It is a sad and an unfortunate thing to have to go through for someone who loves their animals. But as animal owners it is our responsibility to do just that for the animals who depend on their owners to make the right choices and take responsibility for their care and well being. Thank you for doing just that. They don't have a voice, WE are their voice. That is why the humane society was founded to be the voice for those animals who can not tell you they are in need of help. They don't have the ability to open the gate and go in search of food and water. If this woman would have contacted the police about her animals dropping dead of poisoning, why didn't they mention that fact in the police report? This whole situation should have never happened. If she really cared for them there would have been water there for at least the ones that are barely alive now. No water even on the property? Please explain to me how she was even trying to care for them? No food even on the property. She has to take responsibility for her neglect period, whether her ex was doing something or doing nothing. There are ways to get help if you really want them. Newspaper articles, pin up an ad in a grocery store, ask a local radio station to read it on the radio and ask for help. That is just a few I can come up with to start. Many local horse clubs could provide help if they were notified. You can't sit there an act like nothing is wrong when something is VERY wrong here. And if they make this picture smaller.....do you think people will get the severity of this deed? I respect your feelings on it bothering you....THIS NEEDS TO BOTHER SOMEONE!!!! Sometimes people can't see things until its right in their face. Sad but true. I hope this gets more than local attention. Some one,and it sounds like more than one person, needs to be held accountable. So I am saying please think twice before you shrink the size of the photo, so that the size of the crime won't shrink with it.

Tears flow down my face as I try to post this comment......I am so sick to my stomach that this situation was ever allowed to get this far. My heart aches for those innocent domesticated animals who were not cared for and left to die on their own. Seems there were several "Red Flags" leading up to a very sad ending.......as citizens, neighbors and brothers we need to be aware of what is going on around us so that we can be there to help or step in if needed. Let this be a very sad reminder for all of us who may not be walking with our eyes and ears open to the needs of those (all of God's creatures) around us.

Sunday, March 27, 2011 | Report this

Like akmngirl, I would normally not bother to register to comment, but this is just too appalling. I also agree that the sheriff's office shares the blame for this! They have known what was happening for weeks, and DID NOTHING! "Litman said he was not going to second-guess the decision of the deputy involved. “We’re working with the owner of the animals,” said Litman, who said his officers insisted that Berg provide her animals with food, water, and shelter. “We’re insisting that those conditions be met.”...REALLY? How did they do that if they never went there to check on the condition of the animals? Surely if they DID check on the condition of the animals, they would have seen that they were not being given food or water! Yet nothing was done!?! WTF!

derrangeddruid... You truly ARE deranged!!! Are you seriously trying to suggest this story was done for publicity for a kennel?! It might not be possible to be bury animals in the winter, but the problem is not that these animals weren't buried! The problem (since you seemed to have missed it!) is that they were allowed to starve to death! You said "don't you think that this is a slap in the face for people that probably cared about these animals and couldn't move through the grieving process because they couldn't bury them because of winter"... Excuse me? If they CARED so much about these animals why did they abandon them there, while they went somewhere else to live? Couldn't bring the large animals with them? What about the dog??? These animals were trapped in filthy cages without food or water, and the owner just left them there! Why didn't she at least let them out of the cages?

Certainly not the most responsible choice available to her, but BETTER than leaving them trapped in cages to suffer!!! The story of them being "poisoned" does not wash at all!

This woman is pure evil, I can only hope that she will get what she deserves. I know that reality is, this kind of thing goes on all the time, all over the country. Watch Animal Cops ...it makes me cry every time :(

She will get off with a slap on the wrist and people will soon forget all about it.

Sunday, March 27, 2011 | Report this

I can't agree with diannedawn more. Charging these girls with tresspassing is ridiculous and certainly doesn't make the situation/problem at hand go away. These animals were starved and severely neglected, and that doesn't happen overnight.

In response to ahlquinn- some of us that live in the northland live in very rural areas and have long driveways and trees that block out all visiblilty to our property. Even the mailman delivers to a box at the end of the driveway. The general public has absolutely no idea what goes on and would never know unless they had a need to pay a visit to said property. Fortunately, there was a need to visit this property and the story unfolds. The owner should be fined with a jail sentence attached. We need to hold the deputy responsible for his hesitation in acting on this horrendous ordeal. Personal relationships that could have led to the starvation and neglect of these animals should not even enter into the equation. Neglect and stupidity are no excuse. Someone must pay, and unfortunately, it was the poor animals.

to derrangeddruid....First off I know Lisa personally, I will not even try to defend her to your idiotic changing of the subject, I know they did not notify the sheriffs because this is public record. It can be accessed by any one! To your rant about burying in the winter here, you are right but why would you continue to walk over a dead animal? Me personally I would have built my self a big bonfire and burned the carcases She apparently has a lot of trees to cut and burn!! By the way when there is 3 inches of snow you do not need a permit to burn brush and wood! I personally think that you need to get educated and stop defending the cruelty, because when you do you become part of the problem. You need to ask your self some serious questions. Like where am I going in life? I think I have the answer you will be the next generation of Drama Queens crying drunk in the bar! yes I know who you are!

I will gladley take my treaspassing ticket and sleep tonight knowing that I did what was right. ....I look at what happened on that farm as a crime against humanity.. derrangeddruid.- you speak of civil right being violated by the treaspassers ? what are the three most basic civil right? the right to LIFE, LIBERTY and THE PERSUIT OF HAPPINESS..did this berg not violate every one of those in her treatment of these animal and did she hot take away their basic right to life? She decided that their right to life was in her her power to decide.. Or dont you believe that we all have a moral obligation to our fellow man,,, including a responsibility to protect the civil rigths of those who cant defend themselves...how do you feel about the handicapped then , those that cant take care of themselfs? Do you then believe that they are not entitle to the same right to life that you are.? that your civel rights are more inportant then the rights of those who depend on other for care and to make sure they are adiquitly take care of . ...guess you think that only the strong have rights and those who cant take care of themselves and are dependend upon lets say you, can either make without proper care or die..but either way no one should violate your rights especially be coming on your land to save animals that you decided were disposable..okay then...

The dead horse on the front page was STARVED before it died of a "situation". Regarding the poster defending this behavior, if you have ever stepped on your dog's toe by accident, you know they feel pain the same as people do. To allow suffering FOR A MOMENT that is unneccessary should be a CRIME and prosecuted. I don't give a hoot about someone's situation or mental health. Pick up the phone! I hope everyone reading these posts remembers the huge photo of the emaciated, dead horse. I cried for weeks when I had to put my horse down. He was a sweet, warm, and smart boy. I could whistle for him in an 80 acre field holding a bridle and he came running to me. Domestic animals such as Ms. Berg had are pets. They did not deserve anything that happened to them. She does however. I hope the full force of the law comes down on her and whomever else is responsible for the cruelty.

I am pleased to see people getting involved in this story. I love animals, and yes to the chagrin of the Timberjay editorial staff, animals seem to love me, for some reason unexplained. All the dogs in our neighborhood tend to gravitate to our area and hang out all day. Deer, partridge, even ducks walk up from the lake to "hang out" with me. When I was a kid, I worked at the stockyards in Cook. Those feeder calves were going to slaughter, but those big brown eyes would focus on me for some unknown reason, where they would ignore others. This story sickens me! I can't afford to husband horses, cattle or chickens, but if I could, I would make sure they could count on me to provide shelter and feed for them.

This matter tugs at my heart. I hate to think about it each time I see the photos. I don't think jail time for the owner is the answer...awareness and creating an understanding what an owner's responsibilities are is more pro-active to avoid this in the future.

peneloeconstance-If you knew the owners, perhaps you should have helped them. The circumstances are clear-the animals suffered before they died, and the ones still alive were also suffering until a couple of brave women alerted the proper authorities. Leaving dogs, horses, goats, etc. alone in the winter without food, water and shelter should be a CRIME. If it is not, the laws need to be changed. Why has not ms. berg been charged? Or has she? I was reading other websites (there are dozens now!) Ms Berg's separation/divorce happened at least 2 years ago. What kind of excuse is that anyway? Why does she still have the animals? State law needs to change! Please contact your representatives and senator to change MN law! If you abuse a dog they can take it away. Not so with "farm" animals. These animals were like pets. They were unable to fend for themselves. She needs to go to jail for a long, long time. Her "poisoning" delusion has been disproved. What she did was and is criminal. I hope all animals are taken away ASAP and she is not allowed to own any for the rest of her life.

This landowner has been charged with a misdemeanor. If convicted, it equates to something like a $500 fine, jail time waived, and a stern talking to. If folks actually want to change things please contact your state representative and senator, and demand the the penalty for animal cruelty such as this be raised to a felony; gross misdemeanor at the very least. It won't be a total solution, but its a start.

My family and I are doing something to help these animals. Something I wish we had had the oppurtunity to do before. I cannot undo what has been done but take steps to help in the future.

As we all should.

I can't begin to understand why someone would acquire a score of animals, and them torture them to death by denying food and water. No excuse can explain it away.

Even more disturbing is why law enforcement and the humane society, in our so-called enlightened society, would allow the surviving animals to remain in this individuals custody who clearly doesn't have the wherewithal to be a pet or livestock owner. It's as if the authorities are treating this like a violation of a lawn-mowing blight ordinance or something equally trivial. It's an absolute outrage.

I have contacted the sheriff's dept to no avail. I want some answers from someone. What websites are there out there regarding this situation? I also would like to help the person that is getting a trespassing charge.

I heard back from the Mn Hooved Animal Rescue, I think they are the ones that came up and looked around? and they seem to think the situation is under control? i do not think the owner should be taking care of the animals that are left there. What else can we do?
