TOWER — The Tower-Soudan Historical Society (TSHS) is closing out the year with a renewed call for community support as restoration of the Historic Fire Hall enters its final phase. Through its year-end Founding Supporters Campaign, the society is inviting residents, visitors, and friends of the area to help complete the transformation of the 1895 landmark into a vibrant community gathering space.
Over the past 11 years, the project has seen major progress, including structural restoration, HVAC and electrical upgrades, new restrooms, roof replacement, exterior and interior brick wall improvements, and preparation for modern amenities. Completion is expected in 2026, with remaining work focused on reconstructing the south wall – including rebuilding the historic arches and installing a door large enough to welcome home the 1891 James Tippet steam fire engine, which will be returned to the fire hall once restoration is complete. Final interior finishes, enhanced accessibility features, and a new audio–visual system will further support programs, presentations, and community events.
“This project has been more than a restoration, it’s been a community movement,” said Nancy Larson of the Tower-Soudan Historical Society. “We’re grateful for the support that has brought us this far, and we’re asking the community to help us take the final steps. Every contribution, large or small, moves the project forward.”
The Founding Supporters Circle recognizes donors who have contributed to the project between 2018 and 2025, with acknowledgment at the following levels:
Legacy Circle – $500,000 and above
Cornerstone Circle – $50,000 to $499,999
Visionary Circle – $5,000 to $49,999
Community Circle – $250 to $4,999
Members of the Founding Supporters Circle will be permanently recognized on a plaque displayed inside the restored Fire Hall alongside the public agencies and private foundations whose support has made the project possible. The plaque will serve as a lasting reminder of each donor’s role in preserving local heritage and ensuring that the story of Tower, Soudan, and Lake Vermilion continues to be shared.
Once complete, the Historic Fire Hall will serve as a modern, multi-use community hub for meetings, cultural programs, educational events, and private gatherings. The project not only saves one of Tower’s most recognizable landmarks but also expands opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with the area’s rich history.
Multi-year pledges are accepted, and TSHS is set up to accept gifts of appreciated stock and securities. Individuals interested in joining the Founding Supporters Circle can mail their donation to TSHS at PO Box 465, Tower, MN 55790.
