Babbitt mayor announces bid for Minnesota Senate

BABBITT — Andrea Zupancich, mayor of Babbitt and local business owner, announced her candidacy for Minnesota Senate District 3 as a Republican, setting up a rematch for the seat in 2026.
Zupancich has served as Babbitt’s mayor for nine years and previously served two years on the city council. She also sits on the St. Louis County Board of Adjustment and Planning Commission.
“The people of Senate District 3 were sold a bill of goods and have been hung out to dry by metro politicians and our state senator over the last three years,” Zupancich said. “I am running to restore balance in state government and bring forward common sense solutions that make life more affordable for these families.”
Zupancich criticized what she described as increased taxes and fees on family budgets and fraud in state programs.
“Northern Minnesotans want an independent voice to fight for our way of life,” she said. “We deserve so much more than a senator who’s become a rubber stamp for the far-left, metro agenda.”
Zupancich owns z’Up North Realty. Her husband is a fifth-generation co-owner of Zup’s Family Grocery, which has been in business for more than 100 years. They have lived in the district for over 30 years and raised their children there.
She serves as a member of Fight for Mining and Mining Minnesota, and as a director on the Up North Jobs Board. Zupancich has emphasized her support for domestic mining and its role in regional economic development.
“I chose to live here well before I was involved in any politics knowing what a great area it is,” she said. “Throughout my work, I have always stood strong for our way of life and fought for our shared values. I hope to bring my experience in business and local government to St. Paul to ensure Minnesota is the best place to work and raise a family. My campaign is built on honesty and integrity with a singular focus on supporting the good families of the Northland.”
Senate District 3 includes communities in Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis counties.
