Marvin J. C. Holter

Marvin John Clarence Holter, 78, of Rosemount, formerly of Cook, passed away peacefully at home, on Friday, July 23, 2010. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 31 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook, with a gathering of family and friends on hour prior to the service. Pastor Melissa Stoller will be the officiant. The Trinity Lutheran Church Choir will sing and Bailey Conger will provide the accompaniment. Military honors will be accorded by the combined Honor Guards of Cook and Orr. Interment will be in the Field Township Cemetery. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 1196, Cook, MN 55723, Hospice Care of Minnesota, or your local hospice. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook.

He was born on the family farm in Field Township, near Cook, on March 16, 1932, the son of Henry and Mary (Hoblak) Holter. He graduated from Cook High School in 1951. He entered the U.S. Army in 1952 and served as a military policeman in Korea until disabled in June 1954. He was sent back to stateside where he spent six months in the Great Lakes Naval Hospital, and was discharged with a military disability in 1955. He entered Molar Barber College in Illinois in 1955, and barbered in the Minneapolis area for over 35 years. He was united in marriage to Millicent “Milla” Prince on March 22, 1958, in Bloomington. He retired in 1985, and they moved back to Field Township. For the past five years they had lived in Rosemount. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook, and belonged to its choir.

 He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Milla of Rosemount; their children, Mark (Becky) Holter of Northfield, Karen (Frank) Breyette of St. Bonifacius and Jane (Daniel) Wolfe of Rosemount; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nine siblings, Harry Holter of Cook, Irene Baumgartner of Cook, Ethel Barnes of Cook, Mary Ann (Robert) Race of Toronto, Canada, Lloyd (Judy) Holter of Cook, Dennis Holter of Cook, Nancy (Jim) Rinne of Angora, Allen Holter of Cook and James Holter of Blackduck Lake; along with numerous other special relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister-in-law, Dolly Holter; and brothers-in-law, Robert Barnes, Donald Baumgartner and Floyd Papin.

 Lawrence R. Aune

Lawrence R. Aune, 89, of Cook, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at the Cook Nursing Home. Memorial services were held on Saturday, July 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook. Pastor Melissa Stoller was the officiant. Singing was congregational, with Bailey Conger the pianist. The honorary bearers were Lawrence’s grandchildren, Mark Aune, Stacy Aune, Kraig Aune, Thomas Aune, Matthew Aune, Spencer Aune, Andrew Aune, Zachary Aune, Laura Cheney, April Glass and Erin Bryson. Military honors were accorded by the combined Honor Guards of the Cook Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1757 and the Orr American Legion Post 480. Interment was in the Cook Community Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook

He was born on Jan.19, 1921, at Cusson, the son of Louis and Alma (Amundson) Aune. The family moved to Linden Grove Township in 1929, where he attended school, then to Cook in 1933. Lawrence served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. He was an airplane crew chief, and served in India. On Feb. 6, 1943, while stationed in Kansas City, Mo., he married Lorraine Holmbo. After his honorable discharge, they settled back in Cook. In 1975 they moved to Ranier, then to Lake Vermilion-Cook in 1981. He was a car man for the DW&P (Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific) Railway, retiring in 1983 with 25 years of service. Earlier he had owned a well drilling operation, and he and Lorraine owned and operated L & L Bakery in Cook from 1961 to 1972. Lorraine was well known for her creative cake decorating skills and Lawrence for his delicious peanut butter twists.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Cook Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1757 and was a dedicated Cook volunteer fireman for over 20 years. His family fondly recalls his hobbies as “doing a little bit of everything,” and enjoying it. He loved swimming, enjoyed fishing, and was one of the founding members of the Cook Timberwolves Snowmobile Club. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Lawrence had been residing at the Cook Community Nursing Home for the past three years. He will be immensely missed by his family, although they do take great comfort in knowing he has been reunited with the love of his life, Lorraine.

Lawrence is survived by his four sons, William (Susan) Aune of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., Richard (Susan) Aune of Lake Vermilion-Cook, Glenn (Sharon) Aune of Idington and James (Arlene Jershe) Aune of Lake Vermilion-Cook; two brothers, Earl (Katie) Aune of Cook and Marvin (Linda) Aune of Lake Vermilion-Cook; one sister, Carol (Virgil “Squeek”) McCue of Cook; 11 grandchildren, Mark (Cathy) Aune, Stacy (Ken Bartlett) Aune, Kraig (Amy) Aune, Thomas (Monique) Aune, Matthew (Deana) Aune, Spencer (Stacy) Aune, Andrew (Nikki Augustson) Aune, Zachary (Michelle) Aune, Laura (Michael) Cheney, April (Jesse) Glass and Erin (William) Bryson, 17 great -grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marian Nord of Cook; brother-in-law, George Palo of Duluth; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 67 years, Lorraine on Jan. 25, 2010; and three brothers, Palmer and Olaf Aune, who both died in youth, and George Aune, who died on Okinawa during World War II.

Ruth Legg

Ruth Otava Legg, 77, of Duluth and Lake Vermilion-Cook, died at home on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, from complications of pulmonary fibrosis. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 31 at Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia, with family greeting friends one hour prior to the service. Services are entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota. Memorials are preferred to NE Minnesota Food Bank or Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, Milton; son, Thomas Devney (Julie) Legg; daughters, Jennifer (Lowell) Cin and Cynthia (Christopher) Kauffeld; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Samuel Legg, and Madeleine and Abigail Ruth Kauffeld; two step-grandsons, Brady and Casey Peterson; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alice W. Jacksha

Alice W. Jacksha, 81, of Hibbing, formerly of Angora, died on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 31 at Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service Chapel in Chisholm with the Rev. Robert Hodge officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday. Interment will be in Chisholm Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Balkan Town Hall. Eleanor A. Esala

Eleanor A. Esala, 75, of Virginia, died on Sunday, July 25, 2010, at Wendigo Pines Assisted Living in Grand Rapids. A graveside service was held Wednesday, July 28 at the East Pike Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Grateful for having the privilege of sharing in her life are her son, Steven (Donna) Esala of Embarrass; granddaughter, Nichole Esala of Embarrass; grandson, James Torvi of Texas; great-granddaughter, Jeanne Torvi of Texas; brother, Kenneth (Carol) Kangas of Virginia; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Esther B. Mattila

Esther Blanche Mattila, 73, of Ely, went peacefully home to the Lord on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at her home. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.

Survivors include her children, Dan Mattila of Blaine, Dale (Connie) Mattila of Mora, Arla Fredrickson of Virginia and Vicky Hanson of Finland; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Jeanette (Dwaine) Kujath of Brook Park, Katherine Sustersich of Ely and Sharon (Jerry) Lassila of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews.

Randy J. Serson

Randy John Serson, 58, of Hibbing, died on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at his residence. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, July 27 at the Range Funeral Home in Hibbing. Pastor Rod Tuomi officiated.

Survivors include his mother, Maybel Serson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two children, Maxine (Stormin) Carey of Iron and Nick Serson of Nashwauk; three grandchildren; brother, Peter (Judy) Serson of Ely; and sister, Marion (John) Serson of Scottsdale, Ariz.

William T. Manner

William T. Manner, 85, of Hibbing, died on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, in Cornerstone Villa in Buhl. Per his request there will be no services held at this time. Elizabeth Enders

Elizabeth “Betty” Goad Enders, 97, of Bloomfield, Mich., and Lake Vermilion-Tower, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2010. A memorial service was held on July 25 at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home in Royal Oak, Mich., with Rev. Randall Schlak officiating. Memorial tributes may be sent to the Audubon Society or Henry Ford Hospice.

Betty is survived by her cousin, Thomas Goad; special “son”, Ted Lynam and family; special “nieces and nephews”, Douglass Goad, Linda Larisch and Theodore Goad; and countless friends on Lake Vermilion, where she and her late husband Wilbur “Red” were summer residents for many years.
