A trip to the greenhouse shows growing season is coming

ELY – A cold wind was blowing through Ely Monday morning. The temperature plummeted more than 20 degrees from the day before. Fickle days of spring continue as April reaches the halfway point.

Inside a group of greenhouses on the west end of town, the warm, humid, earthy aroma of sprouting plants tells a visitor that spring is indeed right around the corner.

Several green thumbs at Ely Flower and Seed have been working feverishly for the past several weeks planting seeds and transplanting the seedlings of a plethora of vegetables and flowering plants.

“We won’t be getting outside for several more weeks,” said Ruby Baner as she worked on a tray of basil. “These babies are hard to do. They don’t like wet feet (referring to the tenderlings’ roots), and you can’t plant them too deep,” she said. Ruby has been helping out at the greenhouse for the past eight springs. “I love the musty smell and the sea of green. Everything is growing. You can’t stop spring.”
