SILVER BAY—A strong second half allowed the Ely Timberwolves to improve to 3-0 last Friday, Sept. 16, topping the host Mariners by a score of 40-6.

The first half was a tight ball game. Ely scored first with Carter Gaulke connecting with Izaak Nosbisch for a 48-yard scoring strike. The extra point was no good, leaving the score at 6-0. Silver Bay would soon tie it before Evan Omerza’s six-yard touchdown run put Ely back on top.

The Wolves would go in to the half up just 14-6. Coming out of the break, however, it was all Ely the rest of the way.

“We made some adjustments to what they were doing on defense,” said Ely Head Coach Brian Lamppa. “It was the difference in the second half.”

Josh Heiman would start the scoring binge with a big 55-yard touchdown run. That was followed by a nine-yard Blaise Lah touchdown run, a 41-yard Carter Gaulke touchdown pass to Adam Porthan and a 40-yard Matt Gerzin touchdown run to finish off the scoring.

Offensive leaders for the Wolves included Heiman with 110 yards rushing, Gaulke with an impressive 159-yard passing and Nosbisch with 73 receiving yards.

Defensively, Augie Richter had 12 tackles, Porthan and Gerzin each had 11 and Jasiah Wigdahl had two fumble recoveries.

The Wolves will host Cook County on Friday as part of Ely’s Homecoming Week.

“They like to throw the ball,” said Coach Lamppa. “They’re going to come after us. Right now, everyone wants to beat us.”
