Vivid fall colors reaching peak

REGIONAL– The peak of fall color has arrived in the North Country, and it looks to be one of the best color seasons in years. The combination of chilly nights and sunny days for much of the month has served up the perfect conditions for the most vibrant colors.

Maples are currently at peak and the aspen and birch are quickly changing to their autumn golds, making for a spectacular color palette.

If you’re looking for great places to view the fall colors, try these locations:

  • Hwy. 169 between Soudan and Ely.
  • Pfeiffer Lake Forest Road, located off Hwy. 1 between Tower and Cook.

The portion of the road from the campground south to Big Rice Lake is spectacular.

  • If you’re looking for a colorful walk, hike up Jasper Peak near Soudan this weekend for a jaw-dropping view from the observation tower.
  • The Echo Trail between Ely and Crane Lake.

But don’t wait. You know the colors don’t last long!
