REGIONAL— The Tower Timberjay won seven awards in this year’s Better Newspaper Contest, including two of the most prestigious awards in the contest. The paper won first place for General Excellence (circ. 1,500 and under) and first place for Best Editorial Portfolio (among all weeklies).

“This paper stood out from the pack immediately,” wrote the judges in the general excellence category. “A great mix of news, features, sports, and editorial page nicely packaged and compelling to read.”

The judges also offered high praise for the Timberjay’s editorial portfolio, calling them “well-written, adroit, very balanced, and nuanced.”

The paper also won a second-place award for general reporting. “The combination of enterprise and news reporting was solid,” wrote the judges. “The coverage of the storm that wrecked the area was the best response to a big story I saw…. Also, this paper was consistent, which can be a problem in this category.”

The Timberjay also won third-place awards in several other categories, including Advertising Excellence, Best Website, Editorial Page as a Whole, and Typography and Design.

The Timberjay submitted its entries under the Tower Timberjay masthead this year. It has submitted entries in prior years under its Ely and Cook editions.
