Rout nets Wolves winning regular season record

ELY - A regular season of growth in team skill directly translated into the win-loss column for Ely this winter.

The Wolves won their fifth game in a row on Thursday, securing a winning regular season with a 57-14 home victory over Northeast Range.

“It was really good to see our team play well going through the last stretch of the season,” Ely head coach Darren Visser said. “Overall, I feel that we have seen a lot of growth in this team. The girls have worked hard all season to continue to get better and in the end have been playing some good basketball.

“It is nice to finish the regular season with a winning record. That was one of the team goals from the beginning of the season. We have shown good improvement from a year ago and we want to continue to show improvement in the years to come.”

Morgan Moravitz led the way for Ely, draining a trio of threes to net 17 points to go along with five assists and five steals.

Erika Mattson joined her in double figures with 10 points, while Shayla Zaverl accumulated nine points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Maggie Isbell added eight points and Kalley Fischer scored five points.

The Wolves narrowly fell the following night, dropping their regular season finale 58-54 at home versus South Ridge on Friday.

Mattson hit six three-point shots to finish with 27 points while also pulling down nine rebounds.

Zaverl finished with 10 points, eight assists and six rebounds and Brielle Kallberg also scored 10 points.

The Wolves earned the No. 6 seed in their sub-section and were scheduled to open the Section 7A tournament against third-seeded Cherry on Thursday.

Play continues on Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday, with all games in Hibbing.
