COOK - Seven players, eight touchdowns, 58 points.

And that was just the first quarter.

The rout was on early as North Woods overpowered visiting Lake of the Woods 66-20 on Friday.

Brendan Parson kicked off the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run, then Chase Kleppe connected with Cade Goggleye on a 21-yard scoring pass.

Garrett Abramson, Mike Buchanan, Dan Holman and Clay Janssen each added rushing touchdowns in the first. Kleppe delivered a 41-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Barto and Abramson brought an interception back for a score.

A combination of repeated Lake of the Woods incomplete passes and efficient North Woods offense enabled the prolific quarter.

Dylan Day ran for a 34-yard touchdown in the second quarter to cap the North Woods scoring.

“We improved our line play, back execution and tackling from (previous games),” North Woods head coach John Jirik said. “We played well as a team to begin the game, which was a goal for the week.

“We usually come in with a game plan and try to stick with it as much as possible unless the opposing team’s schemes make a change for us more logical.”

There was no need to deviate in this contest, with North Woods thriving in all facets.

Kleppe finished with 122 yards through the air, 101 going to Barto.

Buchanan rushed for 94 yards and Day totaled 89 to lead North Woods on the ground.

The Grizzlies were able to get 13 players carries and extensive playing time for their reserves.

“It is always nice to get quality time for our younger players,” Jirik said. “The young players played much better than the game before.”
