DULUTH – It was a lead, but a small one.
And with so much riding on the outcome, a nerve-wracking one.
But, rather than panicking, North Woods calmly stepped up.
Big time.
After holding a narrow 29-26 edge at halftime, North Woods absolutely picked apart Lakeview Christian Academy in the second half of Tuesday’s Section 7A semifinals in Duluth, earning a 76-44 victory.
Now, the Grizzlies will square off against Mountain Iron-Buhl in Friday's section championship game at 7 p.m. in Duluth, with a trip to state on the line.
“We played a good second half,” North Woods head coach Will Kleppe said. “We picked up the defensive intensity and it turned things in our favor.”
North Woods spread around the offensive workload.
Tate Olson scored 17 points and Chase Kleppe netted 16 to lead the Grizzlies, with Cade Goggleye picking up 11 points, George Bibeau scoring 10 and Brendan Parson adding nine.
It was a clash of two young rosters, with perhaps more section match-ups in store in future seasons.
“They are a good team, despite being very young,” Will Kleppe said. “LCA is going to be competitive in the section for years to come.”
