New Greenwood facility dubbed Panian Pavilion

GREENWOOD TWP—The new township pavilion was alive, Saturday, with food, friends, neighbors, music, and friendship.

Chili and sloppy joes, with all the fixings, along with delicious desserts and beverages were free of charge. There was music, a little dancing, and games out on the lawn. Of course, there was bocce ball. The new tennis court was ready to go, though no one was on the new court this afternoon.

The highlight of the afternoon was the surprise dedication of the pavilion. Committee members presented a large wooden sign that will officially name the building the Panian Pavilion.

Dean Panian, as always, was gracious and unwilling to take credit for the project, which was done under his artful oversight.

“This was never about me,” Panian said. “It is about us.”

Panian said the pavilion is a gift for Greenwood Township, its residents and neighbors.

“This helps bring our community together,” he said.

Panian noted that the vast number of compliments he has received about the project make it all worthwhile.

“I never wanted recognition for myself,” he said.

Panian joked that the committee couldn’t put up the sign without permission from the town board, but committee members noted they had already received pre-approval for the sign.

The pavilion was constructed almost entirely with private donations of both cash and labor, multiple fundraisers, along with a contribution of $10,000 from the township, plus an additional $7,000 from the township for landscaping work. The pavilion is now available for private rental (call the town hall at 218-753-2231 for information) as well as use by those enjoying the recreational facilities at the town hall. It features picnic table seating, outdoor grills, and electrical service.

The Greenwood Recreation Committee is now looking into the possibility of adding some playground equipment.
