ELY – A 29-year-old man from Maplewood accidentally shot himself in the buttocks while camping on Angleworm Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness last Thurday.
According to a St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office report, the man, who was armed with a loaded 9mm handgun, was preparing to take a nap in his tent at about 3 p.m. when he attempted to remove the gun from a holster near his lower back. In doing so, he accidently discharged a single round into his buttocks.
The man was in the wilderness on his own, but two other hikers discovered him on the Angleworm Trail as he was trying to walk back to the trailhead and they assisted him the rest of the way. The Ely Ambulance later transported the man to Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital, where he was treated for a non-life-threatening injury, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities did not release the man’s identity.
