Late Wolves rally falls short in sections

HIBBING - A third close contest in less than a month tilted Chisholm’s way on Wednesday, as the No. 4 Silverstreaks topped fifth-seeded Ely 62-49 in the first round of the Section 7A tournament in Hibbing.

Chisholm gained control early, building a 34-26 lead by the end of the first half.

Despite a tough night offensively, the Wolves managed to stay within striking distance, cutting the gap to four at 53-49 with under four minutes to play.

That would be where the rally would stop, however, as the Silverstreaks closed the game on a 9-0 run to advance to the section quarterfinals.

“We just couldn’t generate much offensively in the game and got beaten badly with our lack of rebuilding,” Ely head coach Tom McDonald said. “We did not shoot well - 34 percent on the night - and just couldn’t put things together on the offensive end ... I thought it was a good season.”

Carter Gaulke finished the night with 18 points and six assists, Evan Omerza recorded 16 points and four assists and Blaise Lah collected eight rebounds to lead the Wolves.

The two teams also met twice in the closing weeks of the regular season, with Chisholm eking out wins of 64-59 and 60-55 in overtime.

Ely finished the season with a record of 19-8. The Wolves only lost to four different teams on the year, with three defeats coming against Chisholm, two against both North Woods and Mountain Iron-Buhl and one against International Falls.

Seniors on this year’s roster included Josh Heiman, Zach Dean, Evan Omerza, Braxton Casey and Izaak Nosbisch.
