Grizzlies sweep Rangers in opener

Auspicious start for a North Woods team with high hopes for the season

MOUNTAIN IRON— The Grizzlies overcame some season-opening jitters in game one of their road tilt with the Rangers on Monday, surmounting an early deficit to claim a three-game sweep. The Rangers kept it close throughout the hard-fought contest, leading at various times throughout, but the Grizzlies managed to take the match 25-21, 25-22, and 25-19.

It was an auspicious start for the North Woods squad, which is coming off a strong 20-9 season last year in which they made it to the Section 7A semi-finals. And with the majority of last year’s starters back on the court this season, the team has high hopes. “I think that we have strength in players who have matured throughout the season of last year and coming into this season with more knowledge and experience with the varsity game,” said Head Coach Gabby Sundquist.

That strength showed on Monday, particularly with strong hitting from the outside.

Sophomore Caley Olson led the Grizzlies offensive attack, notching 11 kills on the night. Junior Regan Ratai was right behind with 10 kills and two blocks. Junior Hanna Sandberg led on defense, tallying 11 digs, while sophomore Neiva Smith notched four blocks. Junior setter Claire Beaudry put up 22 assists.

The Grizzlies were set to travel to International Falls on Wednesday, after the Timberjay’s presstime, to take on the Broncos. They’ll host Bigfork in their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
