FIELD TWP – A blowout here, a rout there.

Sure, that would be nice.

But North Woods will gladly take what it has been getting.

That has been wins, and several of them.

The Grizzlies rattled off victories in another three squeakers this week, extending their winning streak to six and improving their record to 9-3 on the season.

North Woods topped Nashwauk-Keewatin 5-3 on Thursday, defeated Cherry 5-2 on Friday and topped Wrenshall 7-2 on Monday, all at home.

North Woods has been able to come through in close games in large part because of clutch hitting from its top sluggers, alongside production from young hitters proving adept at getting on base.

“Our top hitters are coming through at times that are very crucial, and some of our younger kids are getting on base and scoring runs,”North Woods head coach Jeff Chaulklin said. “Our pitching, we are there.

“We’re on the plus side of it now, but that could end tomorrow. I’m very happy that we’re winning these games, but it’s a long season. We’ll see when playoffs are here – we have a good shot.”

The Grizzlies hope to clean up the defensive side of their game to provide more breathing room than they have had.

“We just made too many errors, otherwise the games wouldn’t even be close,” Chaulklin said.

“(But) the kids who are punching in and showing up every day are playing well enough to beat teams and I’m super happy about it.”
