FIELD TWP - North Woods topped Ely 82-59 at home on Tuesday, completing a season sweep and improving to 16-1 on the season.

The Grizzlies used their defense to set up their offense, forcing 18 turnovers to get several fast-break opportunities.

“We just can’t do that against a team the caliber of North Woods,” Ely head coach Tom McDonald said. “They play great defense and just wore us down as the game went on. We also didn’t rebound against them and only had 21 rebounds on the game.

Carter Gaulke scored 21 points to lead the Wolves, with Pat Vanderbeek scoring 10 points and Izaak Nosbisch grabbing six rebounds.

Ely registered a 102-36 rout at Littlefork-Big Falls on Friday.

Gaulke finished with 29 points and 11 assists, Vanderbeek scored 21 points, Evan Omerza netted 19 points, Blaise Lah had 10 points and Braxton Casey finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

“Our pressure defense turned them over quite a few times in the first half to get the big lead and we shot the ball well,” McDonald said.

North Woods encountered some resistance before putting away visiting Eveleth-Gilbert 80-63 on Friday.

Tate Olson drained five threes in tallying a team-high 23 points, with Cade Goggleye collecting 16 points and nine assists and Brendan Parson adding 14 points.
