BIWABIK - North Woods junior Tate Olson shot a 77 to capture the individual East Range Conference Tournament championship on Wednesday at The Quarry in Biwabik.

Olson’s finish helped lead the Grizzlies boys to a tie for fourth place.

Following for North Woods were Sam Frazee (90), Chase Kleppe (91), Blake Scofield (95), Davis Kleppe (111) and Ian Olson (112).

Northeast Range/Ely was led by Ben Novak with a round of 107.

The North Woods girls used a balanced effort to earn third place overall.

Kylie Parson was the top scorer with a round of 100, followed by Kristen Lilya (102), Nicole Olson (106), Kate Beaudry (113) and Ashley Vito (123).

Northeast Range/Ely was led by Susan Cook with a score of 116.

“Wednesday was a really tough day to play golf,” North Woods girls head coach Kandi Olson said. “It rained during the entire tournament, but these kids powered through without a single complaint. I was really proud of their great attitudes even though they were cold and wet for nearly five hours.”

The North Woods boys went on to play at the Virginia Invite on Friday, with Tate Olson securing the ERC’s Medalist of the Year honors for low scoring average with a round of 68.

“Considering (Tate) also plays baseball, it is an impressive feat to be so successful at golf,” North Woods boys head coach Will Kleppe said. “He is dedicated to improving his game every time he goes out to play, so his dedication has paid off.”

Chase Kleppe (88), Frazee (92), Scofield (93) and Davis Kleppe (95) followed for the Grizzlies.

The North Woods girls finished in third place at Friday’s ERC meet in Ely.

Lilya led the Grizzlies with a round of 45 to tie for fifth place individually, followed by Nicole Olson (48), Parson (48), Beaudry (53), Vito (60) and Haley Bogdan (68).

Cook led NER/Ely with a score of 54.

North Woods and NER/Ely were scheduled to play at the Section 7A tournament on Wednesday and Thursday in Virginia.
