Grizzlies earn sixth at state

BECKER - North Woods followed up a repeat Section 7A championship with a sixth-place finish at the Class A state girls golf meet in Becker last week.

The Grizzlies knocked 55 strokes off of their score from a year ago as they finished with a two-day total of 765.

BOLD emerged as the team champion with a score of 693, followed by Fillmore Central (697), Springfield (701), Park Christian (733), Minneota (745), North Woods (765), Fertile-Beltrami (791) and Windom Area (799).

“We were very happy with where we finished,” North Woods head coach Kandi Olson said. “Of course, the girls always look back and find things that they could have done better, but for the most part everyone played very composed golf during the tournament.”

Nicole Olson was the top placer for the Grizzlies, tying for 19th place with a score of 177.

Kristen Lilya was close behind in 25th place with a total of 182.

Kate Beaudry earned 52nd place with a score of 198, Kylie Parson tied for 69th place with a score of 212 and Ashley Vito finished in 76th place with a score of 222.

“I was very pleased with their play both days,” coach Olson said. “Most of the girls shot rounds below their season average so that was something to be proud of.”

After an eighth-place finish at last year’s state meet, the Grizzlies climbed two spots this year, taking off double-digit strokes per golfer.

“This time we knew it was critical that everyone shoot their average or lower,” coach Olson said. “However, the pressure of state golf can be a challenge. This year we focused on our team score and by doing so, we dropped 55 strokes from our score last year. That’s a huge change. That achievement took a total team effort.”

It was the final high school meet for seniors Lilya, Beaudry and Vito, who played a vital role in back-to-back section titles and also helping the Grizzlies win the Section 7A All-State Academic Award.

“I was so proud of each and every one of them,” coach Olson said. “They played mature, steady golf and represented North Woods in the best possible way.”
