FIELD TWP—The Timberwolves rallied late in their Section 7A softball tilt against North Woods last Thursday and scored in the ninth to edge the Grizzlies 7-6 in extra innings.
Ely grabbed the early lead in the contest, with single runs in the first and second innings and two more in the third.
The Grizzlies scored one run in the first inning but trailed 4-1 through three. But the Grizzlies drew blood on their second run through the order, as they scored three in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead.
The Wolves edged back into the game with single runs in the sixth and seventh to send the game into extra innings knotted at six. The Grizzlies couldn’t answer a single Ely run in the top of the ninth, to suffer the loss.
Erika Mattson took the mound for Ely, allowing seven hits and striking out 11 in a complete game. No pitching stats were available for North Woods. Ely had a strong performance from the plate, with 15 hits to seven for the Grizzlies.
Both Mattson and Charly Flom ripped three hits on the night, while Jenna Merhar notched two hits and an RBI. McCartney Kaercher also notched an RBI for Ely.
Senior outfielder Kate Stone drove in two runs for the Grizzlies.
