HIBBING – Ely battled Chisholm in a heartbreaker here Thursday, as the Timberwolves fell to the Bluestreaks 42-41 in the Section 7A playoffs.
“We just couldn’t make the shots,” said Ely Head Coach Tom McDonald, whose team led 26-20 at halftime, but saw its lead evaporate in the second half.
Carter Gaulke led Ely with 13 points while Evan Omerza added 10.
The Bluestreaks’ Andrew Jugovich emerged as his team’s top scorer, bucketing 14 points. Eli Sundquist contributed seven.
Ely took an early lead, outscoring Chisholm 11-3, but the Bluestreaks even the score at 11-11 after baskets by Jugovich and Sundquist.
The Bluestreaks bolted to a 42-23 lead with two minutes left to play, but Ely cut the lead to a single point with 43 seconds to go.
But the Wolves couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity, and fell short as time ran out.
Ely ends the season with a 20-6 record.
