ELY - The Ely Community Spring Musical, “Caberet,” was well-received by audiences during the first weekend of performances at the Vermilion Community College auditorium. Additional performances are set for this Friday and Saturday.
The production, presented by the Northern Lakes Arts Association, is the 1966 stage version of “Cabaret.” The story focuses on the nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around American writer Cliff Bradshaw (Todd Crego) and his relationship with English cabaret performer Sally Bowles (Nicole Sophia). A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Frau Schneider (Maria Pascke) and her suitor Herr Schultz (Zeke Smith), a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies (Tom Bennet) at the Kit Kat Klub.
An array of college students and community members fill out the cast as Kit Kat Klub dancers, waiters, patrons and various Berliners from many walks of life.
The production, with collaboration from Vermilion Community College, concludes this weekend, with performances on Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at BrownPaperTickets.com (credit cards) and Kess Gallery (cash/check) or at the door. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for NLAA members and $8 for students.
