Voters will have choices in local school board races

REGIONAL— School board elections will provide voters with a general election choice this year in both the St. Louis County and Ely school districts.

Six candidates have filed for three open, four-year terms on the Ely School Board, including Alexis Leitgeb, who had previously served as superintendent in the district. Others filing for the four-year seats include Geoffrey Galaski, Heidi Mann, James Pointer, Zachary Walen, and Tom Omerza. Pointer currently serves on the board, having been appointed to fill the term left vacant by the resignation of Amy Richter.

That seat on the School Board is up for a two-year term. Scott Kellerman, the longest serving member of the Ely School Board, is the sole candidate for the two-year seat.

ISD 2142 filings

Two incumbents opted not to file for re-election this year, clearing the way for new faces from the Orr and AlBrook attendance areas.

In Orr (District 1), Melissa Roach and Patrick Christensen filed for the position being vacated by Nancy Wall Glowaski.

In Babbitt-Embarrass (District 4), longtime board member Gary Rantala will face a challenge from both Ron Marinaro and Chris Koivisto.

In the Cotton attendance area (District 6), current board chair Chet Larson will face a challenge from Randy Jackson, while in the AlBrook attendance area (District 7), Christine Taylor and Gardner Lepp will vie for the seat being vacated by Robert Larson.

The Timberjay will have more coverage of these races in upcoming editions. The general election is set for Tuesday, Nov. 8.
