COOK - Blessed by perfect weather, the Cook Hospital’s fifth annual Shake-A-Leg Walk/Run drew a record turnout on Saturday.
The event, which raises funds for the Cook Area Food Shelf, had 134 registrants.
Brian McCarthy, who organizes the annual event, said he was pleased by the turnout and the bigger donation it will bring to the food shelf.
He also thanked the area businesses that help sponsor the event and the volunteers, including the Cook Lions Club, who assist with a safe and successful event.
Andrew Jones finished the five-kilometer (3.5 mile) race first with a time of 18 minutes, 16 seconds. The first woman finisher was Amanda Zibrowski, who clocked in at 20:44.
“I was trying to keep pace with the lead runner and my grandchildren,” joked Zibrowski.
Among the runners new to the event this year were Bill and Dottie Marbaker, who spend their summers on Lake Vermilion and were celebrating their 61st anniversary on Saturday.
Asked which was tougher — 61 years of marriage or the walk/run — Dottie immediately said the walk/run. “Right now, this is the toughest,” she said. “But we made it.”
Her husband said Dottie was just being nice. “She stuck with me for 61 years and even let me sleep with her for 61 years,” said Bill.
The couple’s daughter, Susan, talked them into participating in the walk/run. She finished in 33 minutes, but joined her parents for the last mile.
Due to computer issues, the Cook Hospital was unable to release all participants’ times.
