Rumble stripes made me feel safer

I made a trip, by car, to Michigan two and a half months ago. On some of the roads I traveled there were rumble stripes not only on the white line but also down the middle of the road. I don’t remember noticing them as I drove to Michigan, but rather as I returned home from Michigan, when I was more tired. The noise has a real way of waking a person up and getting their attention.

While I did not like listening to the noise, I became very thankful for it because I realized I was safer.

What I have noticed is that because of the jolting noise of the rumble strip, I tend to stay in the lane better. I like that. As we get more used to the strips being there my hope is that we will become better, safer drivers and I hope the home owners will become adjusted to it also......kind of like living by the railroad tracks.

If I wanted to live by a railroad tracks, I would have bought a house nearby them. If I wanted to live on a highway with rumble strip noise, I would have bought a house nearby them. I wanted neither, so I bought a house without those major distractions, and now I was given the rumble strips to listen to 24/7. Now who do you think would like to buy my house now with the noise they would have to listen to now?

A few more thoughts.. Were you traveling on rural country roads? Probably not. Should common sense have told you to postpone your trip until you were rested enough to drive? Obviously not. What would have happened if you were in a stretch where there were no stripEs? Think of all the other motorists who would have had to be on the defensive of your driving. What kind of car and what color do you drive so that if I see you I can give you a wide berth since you admit that you drive impaired (too tired to stay in the driving lane).

What a ridiculous comment by Ms Mueller! I am guessing she lives no where near the stripEs or she would not have written it. I love the rumbles where they are far outside the fog line, I rarely drift that far over. These new ones are IN THE ROAD, loud, obnoxious and a huge waste of tax dollars. With any luck, if there is a god, they will be removed.

Our county commissioner has admitted the stripEs were a mistake and he is looking for support to have them moved to the outside of the fog line. He could use our support. Keep writing and making phone calls. I live 1 1/2 miles off of county rd. 77 and can hear them across the lake!!! As far as decibels go: I don't think fingernails on a chalkboard have many decibals, but the sound is certainly annoying, just like the stripEs!
