Ruby's Pantry opens distribution center in Cook

Organization provides low-cost grocery packages to supplement food budgets

COOK - Ruby’s Pantry, a non-profit organization that provides nutritious food at a very low cost, will open a distribution center in Cook.

The first distribution will be on Thursday, April 10 at the north side of the former Cook School. Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m. and distribution of the food will start at 4:30 p.m. Future food distributions will be on the second Thursday of each month.

For the price of $20, people will receive $50 to $100 worth of food. There are no income guidelines; Ruby’s Pantry is for everyone who eats. People are asked to bring plastic tote bags or boxes to collect their food. Volunteers will be available to assist people with transporting their groceries to their vehicles.

The Cook distribution center is being sponsored by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Alango. A portion of the $20 fee will go to St. Paul’s to be used to defray the costs of operating the center and to establish a beneficial fund to help those struggling to pay their daily living expenses.

Ruth Jacobson said early word of mouth on the center has been encouraging “We’re getting calls from Viriginia, Tower, Cook, Orr and the surrounding area,” she said. Jacobson added they anticipate serving 400 people on their first distribution day.

Volunteers are still needed to help with the distribution center. For more information on Ruby’s Pantry or to volunteer, contact Ruth at 218-780-9729, Shirley at 218-780-9041 or Jane at 218-376-4556.

A more detailed story on Ruby’s Pantry will be included in a future issue of the Timberjay.
