Melvin A. King Sr.

Melvin Arnold King Sr., 70, of Silverdale, died at his residence on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011. Memorial services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at the Nett Lake Baptist Church with Pastor Kevin Lasley as the officiant. Honorary bearers were Clarence Roy and Melvin is now walking with Joe Isham, Hunter King, Norman King, Nathaniel King, Francis King and Frank Barnhart. Interment will be in the Nett Lake Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are with Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

He was born in Cloquet on Jan. 19, 1941, to Melvin and Jennie (Roy) King. He grew up in Nett Lake and attended school at Orr. In his teenage years he worked out west, moving with the seasons to different ranches. Melvin was a self-employed logger for years and drove truck for Luecken Logging. He lived in Seattle, Portland and Anchorage working construction and as a mechanic. He drove a semi- truck for 15 years over the road for Kerr-Van Truck Lines, retiring in 1992, due to health reasons. Melvin was known as a jack-of-all-trades. He also liked hunting, fishing and reading - especially Louis L’Amour westerns. He was very knowledgeable in computers, and even built one from scratch. His family fondly remembers him as an outstanding father and grandfather.

Melvin is survived by five sons, Douglas Whiteman of Arizona, Melvin King Jr. of Nett Lake, Terrance King of Virginia, Michael King of Gheen and Gregory Drift of Eveleth; two daughters, Jean L. King of Nett Lake and Lynette Smith of Brainerd; four sisters, Lorraine L. Villebrun, Lela M. Goodsky and Ann Whitecrow, all of Nett Lake, and Jacqueline R. Wilson of Minneapolis; two half-sisters, Barbara Wynoff of Seattle, Wash., and Joyce K. Davis of Nett Lake; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Norman in 1988, his mother, Jennie in 2005; three brothers, Norman, Francis and Nathaniel King;two sisters, Arlene Morrison and Lorraine King as an infant; and one grandson, Hunter King in 2004.

Nancy L. Walden

Nancy Lee (Rinne-Holter) Walden, 68, of Angora, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at the Virginia Convalescent Center. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17 at St. Paul‘s Lutheran Church in Alango with a gathering time for family and friends one hour prior to the service. Pastor Joey Bailey will be the officiant. Burial will be in the Alango Cemetery. Arrangements are with Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

She was born in Cook on March 11, 1943, the daughter of Helge and Edna (Karvala) Rinne. She grew up in Alango and graduated from Alango High School in 1961. She had been married to Dennis Holter for 34 years, residing in Field Township and Cook. She had an exemplary work ethic and did housekeeping for many area businesses and numerous residences in the Virginia, Cook, Lake Vermilion and Orr areas. On Sept. 18, 1996, she married Gerald “Jerry” Walden in Cook. She treasured the wonderful memories of the many 4th of July gatherings at their cabin on Lake Vermilion with family and friends. She was well known as a kind, gentle, helpful and loving person, and will be sadly missed by the many who knew her.

Nancy is survived by her husband of 16 years, Jerry; two sons, Darren (fiancé Suzie Rosencrans) Holter of Thief River Falls and Scott (Joann) Holter of Cook; three grandchildren, Cole, Brittney and Dakota Holter; one brother, James (Nancy) Rinne of Angora; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and special caregiver, Debbie Aune of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis Rinne; and one sister in infancy, Dorothy Rinne.

Irving A. Brodeen

Irving A. Brodeen, 88, of Cook, passed away at his residence on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, surrounded by his family who loved him. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 15 at First Baptist Church in Cook with Rev. Randy Swenson as the officiant. Casket bearers were Irving’s grandchildren. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery of Angora. Military honors were accorded by the combined honor guards of the Cook Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1757 and Orr American Legion Post 480. Arrangements were with Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

He was born in Angora on Feb. 8, 1923, to Victor and Myrtle (Hall) Brodeen. He grew up in the Cook area where he lived his entire life. Irving served in the United States Army for four years during World War II in the Western Pacific and the Southern Philippines, including the liberation of island of Paulau. After his military service he worked hauling pulpwood and did other types of trucking.

Irving was united in marriage to Faith Sundeen on Nov. 24, 1951, in Cook, and was blessed to have 60 years of marriage; to that union six sons were born. In 1951 Irving and Faith purchased the family farm that is still family-owned and operated. He was a member of the 49ers Operating Engineers Union and worked on road construction operating heavy equipment until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cook.

Irving enjoyed time with his family and working on the farm. He was an avid sports fan who especially enjoyed watching his sons and grandchildren competing in high school and college sports. Coaching and working with boys in the Cook hockey program was an enjoyment and privilege for him. He loved hunting and fishing and was blessed to have 22 years enjoying those activities with family and friends after his retirement. He will be always remembered by his family who he influenced and loved.

Irving is survived by Faith, his loving wife of 60 years; six sons, Rev. Randy (Lauri) Brodeen of Superior, Patrick (Karen) Brodeen of Cook, Darrel (Barb) Brodeen of Lake Vermilion-Tower, Curtis Brodeen of Cook, David (Shari) Brodeen of Warroad and Timothy (Kelly) Brodeen of Cook; 10 grandchildren, Brett (Alaine) Brodeen, Scott (Christine) Brodeen, Karilyn (Kyle) Peterson, Eugenia Boshey, Brianne (Brad) Peterson, Philip Brodeen, Joshua (Brianna) Brodeen, Chelsey Brodeen, Krystal Brodeen and Megan Brodeen; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor in 1971 and Myrtle in 1987; and one brother, Oliver Brodeen in 1974.

John B. Scharber

John B. Scharber, 75, of Soudan, formerly of Rogers, passed away at his residence on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Rogers. A gathering of family and friends will be one hour prior to the service. He was born on Oct. 4, 1936, at Rogers, the son of Elmer and Mary (Jansen) Scharber. He grew up in Rogers, where he also raised his family. He served with the U.S. Army. After his tour of duty, John returned to the area and was employed with Honeywell for nearly 40 years. He retired and moved to the Lake Vermilion area, where he enjoyed fishing. He had resided in Soudan the past few years. In addition to fishing, he liked hunting, snowmobiling, and constructing and flying model airplanes. His family fondly recalls that he was a true handyman, and could make, build or repair most anything, especially working with wood.

John is survived by two sons, Jon of Battle Lake and Joe of Park Rapids; a daughter, Debbie (Phil) Zachman of St. Michael; two brothers, Bernard of South St. Paul and Tom (Char) of Cottage Grove; three sisters, Rita Lefebvre of Apple Valley, Marilyn (Gordy) Lefebvre and Judy (Leonard) Madson, both of Zimmerman; three grandchildren, Amy Zachman, Katie Berning and Kara Zachman; his former wife, Ellen Scharber of Park Rapids; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Olive E. Appleby

Olive “Ollie” E. Appleby, 95, formerly of Orr, died on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at Coeur d’Alene Homes in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 15 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Hayden, Idaho. Burial will be on Saturday, May 26, 2012, in Orr, under the care of Mlaker Funeral Home of Cook. Mary J. Bryan

Sally Anderson

Sally Anderson, 67, of rural Gilbert, died on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at her residence. A memorial service was held on Monday, Dec. 12 at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert with Rev. Joel Rova-Hegener officiating.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; son, Mark Anderson of Eveleth; daughter, Teresa Anderson of Eveleth; grandchildren, Nate, Matt and Bradley; siblings, JoAnn (Vern) Wingren of Lakeland, Art (Faye) Hill of Babbitt and Cathy DeBaere (Jay Young) of Hibbing; and extended family and friends.
