June L. Macomber

June Louise Macomber, 91, of Tower, died on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, in her home. A gathering time for family and friends will be held on Monday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Celebration of Life service in St. James Presbyterian Church in Tower. Pastor Bill Evans will officiate. Inurnment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Tower.

She was born on May 21, 1920 in Calumet, the daughter of Robert and Hilga (Hanson) Johnson. June graduated from Greenway High School, Itasca Junior College, and St. Cloud Teacher’s College. She married J. Harold “Mac” Macomber on June 13, 1946, and was a longtime Tower area resident. June taught first grade in Lake Wilson and Soudan. She was a longtime member of St. James Presbyterian Church, a Sunday School teacher for many years and a member of the Presbyterian Women; a member of the Tower Women’s Club; a member of the Loyal Chapter 156 of the Order of the Eastern Star where she served as a Past Worthy Matron and chapter secretary; and a member of the Nelson-Jackson American Legion Post Auxiliary. June was a collector, enjoying music boxes, coins and stamps, and was an avid gardener. She was a good cook and baker and cherished time spent with her family.

June is survived by her husband of 65 years, Harold; sons, Jim (Ann Flannagan) Macomber of Tower, Tom (Jeanne) Macomber of Craig, Colo., and Bill Macomber of Tower; grandchildren, Erica (Jason) Love, Nathan (Teal) Macomber, Alyssa Macomber and Cade Lofquist; great-granddaughters, Ava Madelyn Love and Juliet Sophia Love; a brother, Robert B. (Florence) Johnson of Bovey; other extended family and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Judy Lofquist in 1991; and a sister, Ruth Findley.

David H. Berard

David H. Berard, 78, of Lake Vermilion-Tower, and formerly of Des Moines and Iowa City, Iowa, died on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. A memorial service was held on Thursday, Oct. 20 at Bauman’s Vermilion Funeral Home in Tower with Pastor Bill Evans officiating. He was born on Dec.16, 1932, in Des Moines, the son of Ralph O. and Ruth E. (Houghton) Berard. David served in the United States Army in the late1950s. In Des Moines he was self-employed as a manufacturer’s representative and later worked for Economy Forms Corp as a purchasing agent. He and his family moved to Iowa City where he was the owner/operator of the Pronto Convenience Store in Coralville. David was involved in both the Boy Scouts and the Camp Fire Girls when his children were young and was very active in the Soap Box Derby. He served as the Scoutmaster for Scout Troop 77 in Des Moines, and was a member of the Acanthus Masonic Lodge 632 A.F. & A.M. in Des Moines. He enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, fishing, and being outdoors. David’s two great loves were his family and time spent on Lake Vermilion.

David is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary (nee Paullin); children, Ralph Berard of Vinton, Iowa, Linda (Joe) Vance of Clinton, Iowa, and Carolyn (Jaret) Goforth of West Des Moines, Iowa; sister, Elaine Sparks of Granbury, Texas; sister-in-law, Jeannie (Scott) Thompson of Ankeny, Iowa; grandchildren, Kami Greenwood, Bryan Krough, Rebecca and Rachel Berard, Mike and Nick Vance, Andrew, Abigail, Zachary and Nicholas Goforth; great-grandson, Noah Wilson; nephews, Scott Thompson and Mark (Courtney) Thompson; and a niece, Ann Sparks.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Stanley Berard; and two of his dearest friends, Larry Cassaday and Jack Rogers.

Duane M. Auger

Duane Merton Auger, 81, of Albertville and Tower, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at the Maple Grove Hospital. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Peterson Chapel St. Michael-Albertville Funeral Home. Interment was on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. He was born on June 29, 1930, in Buffalo, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Merton Auger. Duane graduated from Buffalo High School in 1948. He honorably served his country in the United States Navy. He graduated from St. Cloud State University with a degree in Education and went on to Mankato State where he earned an advanced degree in Education to become an Elementary Principal.

On Jan. 24, 1952, Duane Auger and Mary Welch were joined in holy marriage at St. Francis Catholic Church in Buffalo. God blessed their marriage with five children.

Duane became the very first Principal at St. Michael-Albertville Elementary Public School in 1967. After several years, he moved to the Maple Lake School District as Elementary Principal and eventually retired from there. He was a member of the Monticello American Legion Post 260.

He is survived by four loving children, Merton (Barbara) Auger of Buffalo, Murray Auger of Atlanta, Marcia Ann (Mark) Harff of Champlin and Deb (J.P.) Gillach of Albertville; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law: Suzanne (Rod) Dachel of Golden Valley; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by wife, Mary; a son, Michael D. Auger; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merton Auger; and by Gen and Eldred Munsterteiger, who raised him.

Richard F. Christopherson

Richard Frederick “Dick” Christopherson, 91, a lifelong resident of the Virginia area, died on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, in St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia. A memorial service was held on Thursday, Oct. 20 in Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia with Pastor Lisa Buchanan officiating. Military honors were accorded by the Virginia Servicemen’s Honor Guard. Inurnment was in the Melrude Cemetery. Services were provided by Bauman-Cron Funeral Home in Virginia.

Dick is survived by his children, Scott (Terry) Christopherson of Virginia, Vicki (Leonard) Hujanen of Tower and Curt (Alyce) Christopherson of Virginia; grandchildren, Kiira Christopherson, Tracy Mueller, Scott J. Christopherson and Joseph Christopherson; great-grandchildren, Aaron, Kacie, Renee, Lindsey, Megan and Ethan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joanne M. Schaper

Joanne Margaret Schaper, 69, of Ely, died on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth. A memorial service was held on Friday, Oct. 21 at First Lutheran Church in Ely. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.

She is survived and greatly missed by her loving husband of 51 years, Darrel Schaper; daughter, Barbara Schaper of Duluth; son, John (Debbie) Schaper of Ely; granddaughters, Jamie Marolt, Cory (Dennis) Gowell and Holly Lisson; grandsons, Dustin Schaper, Dylan Schaper and Luke (Michelle) Lisson; and great-grandchildren, RJ, Ailie, Jesse and Toby.

Edwin White

Edwin “Ed” White, 75, of Princeton, died on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, at the Elim Care and Rehab Center in Princeton. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at Bethel Church in Princeton.

Ed is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughters, Cheryl White (Darrel Sam) of Onamia, Deb (Steve) Droogsma and Vicki Wallace, both of Princeton, Stephanie Ottmar of North Mankato and Rachel (Erik) Walker of Milaca; 13 grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; brothers, Mike (Janet) White of Embarrass and Chuck (Diane) White of Blaine; sisters, Margaret (Mel) Samuelson of Wyoming and Corrinee Jedlicka of Spring Lake Park; and other relatives and friends.

Patrick A. Sersha
