REGIONAL— The Superior National Forest will soon have a new person in charge. Connie Cummins will soon join the Forest Service’s Duluth staff as Forest Supervisor, taking over from Brenda Halter who retired last month.
Cummins, formerly Connie Chaney, is no stranger to the Superior, having served as District Ranger on the La Croix District for nine years. She is coming to the Superior National Forest from the Fremont-Winema National Forest in Lakeview, Ore., where she has been the Forest Supervisor since 2014.
Cummins began her Forest Service career in the early 1980s as a forester and spent most of her time working at national forests in the Great Lakes region. She spent time as a forest planner and environmental coordinator on the Chippewa National Forest in north central Minnesota, and moved up from there, holding a series of district ranger positions, including her stint on the Cook-based La Croix district.
Cummins said she is excited to be returning to the upper Midwest, which is close to family. “My daughter lives in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and my son resides in Duluth. I am happily looking forward to experiencing some family time as well as dusting off my cross-country skis, lacing up my trail shoes and hitting the trails and lakes of northern Minnesota.”
Cummins plans to assume her new duties in August. In the interim, Deputy Forest Supervisor, Richard Periman, will serve as Acting Forest Supervisor, while Shawn Olson, the Forest Service Eastern Region’s Appeals and Litigation Coordinator, will serve as Acting Deputy Forest Supervisor.
