ISD 2142 refining efforts to boost AYP
By Tom Klein

School District 2142 is refining its efforts to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) after the district failed again to meet the state’s minimum goals in some areas.

AYP is calculated separately by subgroups that include students in special education, English language learners, ethnic groups and students receiving free and reduced-price meals. Results for all students and each subgroup must meet AYP benchmarks in order for a school or district to make AYP.

Superintendent Charles Rick said the district is focusing on fewer goals to produce improvement in subgroups struggling in reading and mathematics at several of the district’s seven schools.

Those goals include more support for staff in increasing their capabilities, a shift in administration from managerial to instructional leaders and providing more opportunities for growth in academic achievement for students.

In other business on Monday, the board:

‰Heard a report from Business Manager Kim Johnson, who outlined the revenue sources for 2142 in the 2009-10 school year. Johnson projects revenues of $25.3 million, with $1.55 million coming from local taxes and another $1.36 million in Local Taconite Aid.

The state accounts for most of the dollars with funding of $18.2 million while federal sources will supply $2.79 million. Other sources of income include tuition from Nett Lake students attending Orr High School, participation fees, food service charges, interest on funds invested or in the bank and proceeds from the sale of tax-forfeited lands.

Johnson cautioned that the district could lose $47,000 due to a decline in taconite production.

•Heard a presentation by Cotton School Principal Jeff Carey and Cook music teacher Bailey Conger on block scheduling of classes.

•Hired Stacia Marsolek as head girls basketball coach for AlBrook, Dave Erickson as head boys basketball coach for Cotton and Gage Ratio as assistant coach, and Joel Anderson as assistant boys basketball coach for Cook.

•Approved the sale of district vehicles including a 1989 Ford van, 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, 1998 Dodge Caravan, 2000 Oldsmobile, 1995 school bus and 1993 Ford.

Gee maybe if the district spent as much time and effort on increasing the AYP as they have on selling a flawed 140 million dollar referendum all the kids in our district would not only be making AYP they would be excelling in reading and math. Get your crap together ISD 2142. You really need to fix your inability to teach before you build new schools.
