ESKO - Hobbled by injuries, North Woods lost its first game of the season and the Section 7 Nine-Man football championship to Kelliher-Northome, 12-0, here on Friday.
Despite the loss of Travis Hooper early in the game due to an ankle injury and a battered quarterback Cole Martin, who played most of the game with a slight limp, the Grizzlies limited the Mustangs’ trips to the end zone.
The first score came on 62-yard scoring run in the first quarter by Mustangs’ Eli Rahler. North Woods’ defense prevented Kelliher-Northome from getting in the end zone again until the third quarter when Daniel Jourdain scored a TD on a five-yard run.
The Grizzlies got close to the end zone after recovering a muffed kick return near the 20-yard line in the first half, but couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity. The defense forced several other turnovers, but Kelliher-Northome’s defense secured the Mustangs’ shutout.
In the end, the Grizzlies ran out of time after several offensive drives fizzled.
North Woods ends the season with a 10-1 record.
The 9-2 Mustangs will take on Norman County East/Ulen-Hiterdal, which defeated Nevis, 29-0, in the Section 6 championship, in the quarterfinals of the State Class Nine-Man football championship. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Bemidji State University.
