Greenwood board shows why elections matter

Posted

The July 24 Timberjay editorial, “Greenwood pay raise”, outlined and did justice to a number of ills that have plagued the Greenwood Town Board. I saved it for an occasional reread. The Greenwood government needs to operate out in the open. We can easily do better than what is repeatedly happening over and over again on important issues here. How many times do we need to be taught the same lesson?

Open government is a proud hallmark of Minnesota local governments, reinforced by State laws. It can be productive, rewarding and enjoyable. That’s obviously not the case in Greenwood. Last week’s subversion of the annual budget process and disregard of open meeting guidelines needed to be pointed out in the paper. It’s almost as if the Town Board took lessons on how to operate from the County School Board. We know how that’s worked out for u$. Open government is simple if there are no hidden agendas. Too many current Greenwood Town Board Supervisors seem to thrive on hidden agendas.  It may be a simpler way to run a meeting and push through unpopular actions, but it is not good for the Township or our pocketbooks. Elections matter.
