wolves took third at the Marshall Hilltopper tournament on Sept. 28, posting a 4-2 record.
Ely beat Lakeview Christian Academy, 2-0 (25-9, 25-19), lost to Spring Lake Park, 0-2 (11-25, 6-25), lost to Duluth Marshall, 0-2 (11-25, 24-26), then won their last three matches, defeating Wrenshall, 1-1 (19-25,25-15), and winning two matches over Two Harbors, 2-0 (25-23, 25-23), and 2-1 (25-14, 19-25, 15-9).
Erin Muhvich had 34 kills and three ace serves, Ashley Snyder had 27 kills and two ace serves, Marlee Muhvich had 19 kills and eight ace serves, and Natalie McDonald added 54 set assists and 11 ace serves.
The Timberwolves lost three straight games to North Woods on Sept. 26, 12-25, 14-25, 15-25. Ely is at 9-8 on the season. The Grizzlies are now 11-6 for the season
Erin Muhvich had 11 kills and two aces for the Timberwolves.
Darby Youngstrom racked up 20 kills. In addition to leading her team’s offense, Youngstrom was 100 percent from the service line, including a pair of ace serves. Teammate Destinie Villebrun recorded six kills and eight ace serves and finished the night with 17 set assists.
“We played well,” said Grizzlies Head Coach Tom Burnett. “Ely is still trying to grow their program, but they’re better than their record shows.”
Tessa Mankus and Zoe Bystrom added four and three kills, respectively, while Jessica Harmston was 100 percent on her serves and notched four ace serves. Emily LaPatka had 10 set assists.
Ely defeated Duluth Marshall on Oct. 1 by a score of 3-2 (23-25, 12-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-6).
Erin Muhvich had 13 kills and one block, Ashley Snyder had 10 kills and three blocks, Adrianna Wittrup added 10 kills, Marlee Muhvich had nine kills, and Natalie McDonald posted 41 set assists.
