Author Diane Dettmann has deep connections to the Embarrass area. Her grandparents, Paul and Hilja Kaurala, settled in the Babbitt area in 1923. Diane and her aunt, Miriam Kaurala Dloniak, coauthored the book "Miriam: Daughter of Finnish Immigrants", a story of the struggles and challenges the Kauralas faced as they raised seven children during the Great Depression. Diane enjoyed chatting with fair visitors as she autographed books.
