While an interesting read I wouldn't necessarily say this was "the most complete discussion of the pros and cons" of mining in the area. While Mr. Helmberger's discussion gave the pros a glancing blow, the focus (slant) was obviously towards the cons.

I have asked the question before and I will ask it again, for those who don't want mining of these metals, what are you willing to give up? How are you going to cut your comsumption? A lot of us have to have the new iPhone the minute it comes out even though our current mobile communications device works just as well. We drive new cars and trucks and want those vehicles to have all the latest safety features while polluting less. We have our computers, televisions and other electronic gadgets. Possibly not realizing all the while, we are creating the demand for the very substances we are in such opposition towards acquiring.

I am not saying people shouldn't be advocating for protection of the area's natural resources. I am saying we should all look to ourselves for solutions first, and unless we are willing to change we should check the NIMBY attitude at the door.
