It's interesting how the 2nd Amendment has been reinvented by the NRA and other pro-any gun groups. Until a few decades ago, it was simply taken as a given in constitutional law that the 2nd Amendment gave state militias (which no longer exist) a right to obtain and bear arms but did not give individuals a right to bear arms. Big clue is how you never hear pro-gun conservatives quote the first part of the amendment, "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state", only the end part, "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". The writers of the 2nd Amendment could not have envisioned the arms we have now, semiautomatic and assault weapons. I think they would have been freaked out.

Most states regulate Sudafed and ID, etc required to buy it but people on terrorist watch lists not allowed to fly can buy guns. No background checks required to buy guns at gun shows. 40% of gun sales are sold by unlicensed dealers. Illegal online gun sales. Some states allow concealed or unconcealed gun carrying in bars, what could possibly go wrong there? A couple of states allow concealed carry weapons without any permit at all. It goes on and on with the NRA lobbying hard in favor of all this and even more dangerous practices.

orrcountry, have you ever had a neighbor constantly firing off weapons? It doesn't make one feel comfortable or safe in your own yard. HIs closet neighbors didn't take their kids for bike rides or walks along the road by his house for obvious reasons. The odd guy has passed on awhile ago so he didn't have time or access then to acquire a grenade launcher but I wouldn't have been surprised he would have had that too if he could have.

I don't get the appeal of assault weapons for even "sane" people. You either assault a non-human target or a human. How much fun can spraying a barrage of ammo at a cardboard target be? And I'm sure law enforcement is just thrilled with the loosening of gun regulation in recent years.

The leading cause of violent death in the US is homicide and suicides by guns. Check out the graph in Washington Post, "Guns kill people, in one chilling graph". The graph is 199 to 2007, I can't imagine what the numbers have been since.

The number of deaths in car accidents have been greatly reduced since seat belts and air bags became the norm. I have no idea why it is so hard to understand we need common sense gun safety on a par with auto safety. We are required to have driver's licenses, auto insurance, etc and no one questions those requirements.

Orrcountry thinks there should be silence on the gun massacres. We are way overdue for serious talk about gun safety.

I'm sick of the NRA's role in promoting unfettered gun ownership, lobbying and spending $19 million in the last election. Their solution is armed teachers, volunteer posses, etc in schools. Ridiculous. Former chief White House ethics lawyer for GW Bush, 2005 to 2007 and now professor of law at the U of MN, Richard Painter wrote and oped in the NYTimes, Dec 19, titled "The NRA Protection Racket". He makes the point that few want people bringing semiautomatic weapons into their neighborhoods saying, "Who worries about the inheritance tax when gun violence may kill off one's heirs in the second grade?"
