Tower/Soudan and neighboring Lake Vermilion offer some of the most spectacular lake country scenery in the Upper Midwest. Lake Vermilion was described in National Geographic as one of the ten most beautiful lakes in the world. And with over 365 islands and hundreds of miles of rock-clad lakeshore, it's easy to see why. Lake Vermilion offers outstanding fishing for all the favorite northern species, such as walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and muskie. It also is the gateway to Trout Lake- a large crystal clear lake trout lake tucked away in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. For those not interested in fishing, try one of the area's many hiking trails, or a visit to the Soudan Underground Mine State Park. For a little nightlife, try your luck at Fortune Bay Casino. The Tower/Soudan/Lake Vermilion area also offers outstanding winter recreational opportunities, being located at the junction of several major snowmobile trails. Excellent cross-country ski trails are found throughout the area and dogsledding tours are also available nearby. Numerous area resorts offer visitors a wide range of lodging possibilities, most designed especially for families. All are open in summer, many are now open in winter. The city of Tower and the township of Breitung (Soudan) operate campgrounds during the summer months. If you're in the area, take advantage of the many services offered in Tower, including a full grocery, pharmacy, hardware store, bakery, lumberyard, retail shops, a bank and credit union, two newspapers, real estate offices, and several cafes. In Soudan, don't miss a visit to the Soudan Community Store. |
