Getting directions to prime fishing areas on Pelican Lake is by no means a complicated process. "It's kind of hard to tell people where to fish," said Clinton Diefenthaler of Pine Acres Resort & Campground in Orr. "But this is an easy lake to fish because there are a lot of places where the fish are biting." Anytime of year, weedlines near deep water, rock piles and points are among the best spots to fish on Pelican Lake, whose most abundant fish species are largemouth bass, bluegills, northern pike and crappie. As one of the area's most productive lakes, Pelican can be kind to beginners or to anyone who is not familiar with the lake. As with most lakes, however, there are a few tips that can help increase your chances of success. Diefenthaler said one of the more effective presentations for northerns is with a spoon cast near weedlines. For bass and bluegills, night crawlers cast into openings among lily pads are hard to resist. While the fishing action on other lakes slows up in mid-summer, especially for walleyes, the warmer water temperatures seem to provoke the feisty northern pike and bass that teem in Pelican's waters. Trolling along weedbeds, especially near deeper water, or working rock piles and points are all good bets for success. |
